Contents pages are kept simple in order to make it easy for the reader to find a specific article. Also it helps the reader to find articles much more quickly. Magazines use page numbers the page numbers are also used on the contents page.

  • A magazine contents page is normally set out into columns. normally the maximum is 4 columns.
  • The layout of the content page is very structured. this is because guidelines and grids have been used.
  • On the contents page their is usually 1 main image that relates to the feature article. The aim of the image is to grab the readers attention.
  • The page heading usually contains the word 'contents' this is inform the reader what page they're on.
  • Contents pages normally stretch over 1 or 2 pages. This is because its allowing the reader to find the article they want easily.

  • The contents page usually contains the magazines issue number and date
  • contents page normally follows the house style which is a combination of colors  fonts and graphics.
  • contents pages are normally white so the readers full attention is on the text.
  • The page numbers are not usually listed chronologically on the website this is because the pages are divided into sections e.g features

Conventions of a magazine front cover

Front covers are the first thing that the reader will see when considering whether or not to buy the magazine. Front covers use bright colours which helps to make them eye catching for the reader. The magazines house style is usually associated with the front cover. House styles are usually a repeated image that is created through colours, fonts and layout.

Conventions of a magazine front cover
    • Masthead at the top of the magazine usually in the left corner. Placing the masthead in the top left corner allows it to be one of the first things in the visual syntax. Usually the masthead has a unique font, fills the width of the magazine cover and is one or two words maximum. The masthead helps to build the brand image.
    • Main image normally shows the object or person associated with the main article.
    • Headlines identify important content within the magazine. The headline is normally the largest font after the masthead
    • Cover lines & tag lines advertise articles within the magazine to help to attract the reader.
    • Pug / starburst are shapes normally trying to promote something within the magazine. Its normally eye catching to attract the reader.
    • Puff is a statement that self advertises the magazine tis normally placed below the masthead
    • Pull quotes / Lure are quotes pulled from an article in the magazine and placed on the front cover to draw attention of the readers.

    NME Annotated Cover

    • Masthead at in the top left corner that reads 'NME'.
    • Different font size for emphasis. Example of this is along the top of the magazine.
    • There are 2 examples of pull quotes/ lures along the right side of the magazine.
    • The house style is red & white.
    • Main headline is 'Amy inside her secret studio sessions'.
    • 'By Mark Ronson, Nas and Salaam Remi' was written in Serif style font.
    • This cover also contains sans serif font style text.
    • Coverlines along the right hand side of the magazine.
    • This cover contains a feature image of Amy Winehouse.
    • The image of Winehouse is medium close up and is a studio shot.
    • Barcode in the bottom right corner.

Along the top strip of the magazine there are names of music bands in white medium sized text. In between the bands name the word 'Vs' is between them in small red text. Below that is a sentence in the same sized red text but bold which could be to emphasise the message they wanted to communicate.
Next in the visual syntax is the NME Logo that is red  and the text is bold which would help to get the readers attention. Next thing that the reader will be drawn to is Winehouse's eyes. In the middle of the cover is a medium close up image of Winehouse. the image is taken in a studio and the backdrop used was small dark polka dots. Down the right side of the magazine there is 4 cover articles that stick to the house theme of red and white.
